RHETORICAL THEORY
Influences of Study and Reflection on Conceptualization of Writing
This assignment, from the Theories of Writing class, aimed to capture one's individual writing theory by means of a multi-genre composition. The project was based upon course readings and discussions in addition to personal reflections about the nature and implications of the written word. Since my background is in science, I chose to mimic the form of a research paper, with each section written in a different genre with a focus on a particular aspect of my theory of writing. The Abstract is the only part written in the style of a research paper, as the goal was to expand beyond my primarily scientific writing and incorporate several genres cohesively in an "outside the box" approach to theory articulation.

Peaceful Protest as Daoist Rhetoric
This short seminar paper was a component of the History of Rhetoric course. It was developed from a blog post about the paradox of noncontention in Daoist rhetoric: the fact that noncontentious rhetoric is inherently contentious. In addition to an explanation of Daoism and the pillar of noncontention in Daoist philosophy, the paper explores the parallel between the ideals of Daoism and more contemporary examples of peaceful protest. The piece analyzes the noncontentious actions of Gandhi's movement and the Tiananmen Square protests, as well as the extent to which each reflects the paradox of noncontention.
